All Star Day 2013 - Jets Game Report

January 23, 2013

1st Period: The Jets Game put on very, faced-paced, entertaining hockey game in front of a great crowd. Team Blue got the first good scoring chance early in the period but early on the goaltenders for both teams showed everyone why they were all-stars. Team Gray also had some good chances in close but they were unable to find the back of the net.

Team Gray thought they got on the board first but the goal had been knocked down with a high stick and was disallowed. Team Blue managed to get the opening goal at the 4:01mark when Dakota Lancers’ Kayla Friesen scored a great back-handed goal; her first of two for the game. Picking up the single helper on the goal was Miles Mac Buckeyes’ Jessica Gzebb.

Starting goaltender for Team Blue was West Kildonan Wolverines’ Kristen Hunt who turned away 11 shots and made some pretty impressive saves for her team. Team Gray started the game with SMA Flames Casey Dame who faced 6 shots.

2nd Period: Team Gray continued to press in the second looking for the equalizer and they had a few good chances but 2nd period starter for Team Blue SJR Eagles’ Danielle Grossman managed to turn away each of the 4 shots faced. Team Blue managed 6 shots at Team Gray’s goaltender PCI Saints Shay Perry, but Perry was able to shut the door on all 6 shots, to help keep the score at 1-0 for the period.

3rd Period: The fans were treated to great end to end action and another goal by Friesen who picked up the puck at Team Gray’s blue line, walked around a defender and put another back hand move on the goaltender for the second goal. Assisting on Friesen’s goal was Dakota Lancers’ Natasha Esquivel.

Goaltenders in the 3rd period were River East Kodiaks’ Sydne Valiquette for Team Blue and Dakota Lancers’ Kelsey Bowerman for Team Gray. With just over 6 minutes left in the game, Valiquette was called on to make a huge save when a Team Gray forward snuck into the slot and let a shot rip in close. Valiquette came out and played it perfectly to secure the shut-out bid for Team Blue’s trio of goaltenders. Valiquette faced 10 shots in total and Bowerman faced 8.

Players of the game:
Team Blue: Dakota Lancers’ Kayla Friesen
Team Gray: Louis Riel Voyageurs’ Karina Durupt

Coaching Staff:
Team Blue: Carla Macmillan, Dakota Lancers; Jim Webster, Miles Mac Buckeyes
Team Gray: Sam Tougas, Kelvin Clippers; Carrie Snelling, River East Kodiaks and Janel Hay, West Kildonan Wolverines
